DREAM FACTORY

10 stills taken from the TV show ‘Deal or No Deal’. A popular gameshow in which contestants pit their wits against ‘The Banker’ in order to win ‘life changing money’. The stills that I photographed have already been framed and selected by the TV production company that refers to the show as ‘The Dream Factory’.

This zooming in on moments of frustration and despair remind me of something. I have seen them before, during broadcasts of war and tragedy and in times of public mourning.

The Post war dream of achieving wealth through hard work and self sacrifice is no longer relevant for our times. Our hopes for the good life are now gained through luck or celebrity – winning the lottery, being selected for Big Brother or as in this case, winning the £250,00 prize on Deal or No Deal. The loss of that dream provokes emotions, seemingly as real as any other personal and painful tragedy.
